I miss...

Hmmm.... i think this one is gonna make me mad...

Kind of reminds me of Xenosaga in that regard(mostly movie)... which I actually enjoyed... so I have a feeling I will enjoy this one, which was not the case for me with FF12.

I also actually like linear games, oddly enough... probably because I no longer play through games multiple times.. for the most part.

I do not like the sound of not choosing which character to control, and having access to only 3 characters does not surprise me.

Of course, as with anything, I still reserve my judgement until I actually get my hands on the game and play through it.

I still miss the days of SE giving us an Airship that we can actually control :(

I remember flying the Hilda Garde 3 in FF9... and whatever the name of that ship you got later.. I think they did an awesome job of that. Did they just get lazy? Or do they think we don't like flying an airship around ourselves?

I've recently started playing Lost Odyssey for my 360.. reminds me so much of what I miss about classic turn-based battles. Maybe it's just nostalgia.. but I do miss it.

FF13 is technically turn-based from what I've seen... but why can't you control all 3 characters? I don't get it.. lol. Still buying it most likely though.. lol.

Yeah i loved the airships of old.... and just the freedom to travel anywhere.... from the major cities to random caves, i really enjoyed it.

Wow, reading that description it sounds absolutely terrible. I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise, Final Fantasy games have been getting progressively worse with each release (except for 8, which was significantly worse than just about every other final fantasy, except possibly 13, which we'll know soon enough).

It's not just the Final Fantasy franchies, Square in general has just been losing their touch, take Last Remnant for example. Completely mediocre in every respect. They try too hard to re-invent the entire mechanics of the game with every release, when the only thing they need to re-invent with every game is the graphics and the storyline. That's it. The mechanics have always been perfect, there's a reason Final Fantasy is so successful.

If you want to make the storyline linear then fine, go for it. It sucks but I can at least live with it. But no sidequests? No towns? No NPCs? What exactly is the point? I mean they've re-defined the Final Fantasy genre a couple of times and given it different names like Crystal Chronicles, or Tactics, maybe this belongs in one of those other categories. But it certainly doesn't sound like an RPG.

It sounds like it offers absolutely no replay value whatsoever, almost all games nowadays offer *some* possible motivation, however slight it may be, to replay the game after you beat it. Earlier final fantasies got around this by adding insane sidequests, like the rare monsters in FF12, or the monster arena in FFX, and while admittedly I knocked all of those really hard because they were basically just there to make up for the fact that the stories were terrible, at least they offered some semblance of choice in how to play the game. This seems to offer none of that.

Why is it so hard for them to understand that people just want a fucking aerial map, random encounters, the ability to travel freely, and a great story? They could save tens of millions of dollars on development time for these elaborate movies, and only lose a small percentage of the playerbase, the result of which would be a net profit.

I always had a strong inclination toward JRPGs and always hated American RPGs, but it's ironic that I find myself saying that Dragon Age is one of the best RPGs I've played in a while and that FF13 is shaping up to be a steaming pile of shit.

It sounds like I can just fire up Progress Quest, download a 1080p version of the cutscenes from Final Fantasy XIII, intertwine them, and have basically the same experience.

I hope I'm wrong though.

FFXIII sounds disappointing... Was so looking forward to it.

To much hate on FFVIII, I loved it and was one of my favorites.

Same here. I played through that game more times than I can count..

In my eyes, the real decline started with FF10 when they threw out the idea of a world map and a player-controlled airship. Still, I enjoyed the game very much regardless...

and then along came FF12...

My whole draw to these games is the epic storylines, and FF12's story could not keep me interested...

As I said, I am sure I will still give FF13 a shot.

I'm definitely looking forward to FF13. The plot looks bigger than in FF12, which was my main gripe about it. No free travel around the world is a minus, but to me it's not the huge minus it seems to be for others.

I also enjoyed 8.

How do Aa and Aqua feel about the game now? Their opinions are worth more I believe.

I would love to have that 3d mini world again, that airship, gah...

My review with category

System.
Optima system is very good. this is like job. Exist total 6
Attacker Blaster defender Healer Jammer Enhancer.
Attacker = Chain Starter and make damage. has AoE Weapon Attack.
Blaster = Magician. Chain gauge builder. has AoE Magic spell(Firega etc)
Defender = knight. save other member. can not any attack other than counter.
Healer = do not need explain lol...
Jammer = Slow Def Attack Down etcetc.
Enhancer = Haste protect shell etcetc.

all character has specialist job.
example = Lighting is Attack Blaster Healer. Snow is Deffender Attacker Blaster.
all character can learn all roll(job) lately. but can not use other 3 jobs at start.

Battle.
〇Button Push rush. sometime use L1 button for job change.
you can use only 3 member in battle. and controll only top member.
CPU do controll other 2 character with setting job.
Attack(Start chain) > Blaster(add gauge) > gauge break > make higher damage > repeat or end.
Boss has a lot of HP. most battle take 10-20 min or more.
PS. you can restart anytime in battle. its same as escape.

Movie = excellent. no joke this is best beautiful movie in all past game.

Story = depend on person. I felt bored. heros got way to be monster.
so heros fight for try not be monster.
you need walk 1 straight way while. so usual do not get lost in field.
fight > Event Movie > f.. (repeat).
most person get bored this working root. because nothing freedom in while.
but world get large since Episode 11. well monster is crazy too.

Characters = <3 Vanilla. other? {Do not know}
ah exist Afro man. definately I felt "Do not fit in FF series"

Music = no memory. I mean not good like other FF series.
FF6 or 10 is best music ever kthx :)

Gear = no armor. so no Def(not Defiant). but exist Damage percentage cut accessory.

Weapon = really few weapon.
but custom it with material(material add exp of weapon) then be very strong weapon.
for example Lighting`s last weapon is Omega weapon.

after Cleared = work for mission. most missions are kill that monster etcetc.

Total.
maybe you might not feel regret after bought.
but you might feel bored while after started.
but sometime you might surprise from great movie.
I felt SE used a lot of money for make this game lol

I love it Aqua! lol. I would have to agree probably as well..

My whole draw to these games is the epic storylines, and FF12's story could not keep me interested...

I started and stopped this game twice because of the story but have taken it up again and gotten further with it without the story bothering me to much. I think I'm on the last chapter and if I'm right then it's one of the shortest FF stories I've ever seen.

I usually always had one character per game i could not stand to play unless forced too...

7) Barret
8) Rinoa
9) Tin-man
10) Tidus
12) Vaan

Really? Barret? Steiner? Aww man ... you gotta be kidding.

Rinoa on the other hand -- oh yeah, I always liked having Squall attack her, felt like poetic justice for turning him into such a wimp.

Vaan I can understand, and Tidus to some degree but, he had a certain charm that amused me..

Playing through 7 again a couple months ago I found Barret a lot more annoying than I remembered.

Afro man

That afro is house of this mini chocobo.

I liked Steiner...

I couldn't stand Quina, although I thought he/she (i dont think anyone knows?? lol) was hilarious.. looking back.

I agree on Vaan though... it's like he was kinda just 'there' and you were stuck with him..

I've been playing Lost Odyssey lately... in love with this game. It feels very 'final fantasy' if you know what I mean... lots of cutscenes, lots of plot twists. Still.. it has its own style to it... there are short stories you encounter at certain points in the game.. I've had a lot of fun reading them, I think I enjoy them more than the cutscenes lol. They really get you thinking about how much of a blessing and a curse being immortal can really be. (not really a spoiler, you can find that out that tidbit on the game box.)

I rather like the game, but I sure wish I didn't hate so many of the characters. Hope is the whiniest, most pathetic bitch boy to ever grace an FF title and that's saying a LOT. Snow is a brainless windbag whose favorite pasttime is making baseless statements about protecting people and then failing laughably when he tries. Lightning is just a stone cold bitch. That leaves us with the afro dude and Vanilla... awesome.

I'm reminded of FF12 which also had a pathetic cast in general, but at least FF12 had Balthier and Fran.
