Can someone explain to me why I can connect fine to the internet but not to aim or ffxi?

I used to have that same problem all the time. That, or could connect so some sites (but not all) and AIM, but FFXI said no connection. Very frustrating - unfortunately I don't remember what resolved it :( GL to you Galkor

Are you on an unusual machine? This might be a firewall or some other software blocking ports... are you behind a different router or switch than usual?

Nope, same setup at home I always have. Was playing FFXI & on AIM just fine then bam, lost connection. No changes whatsoever to setup.

Well... I'd recommend power cycling your router as a quick thing to check... but if that doesn't help I'm fairly stumped. Was anyone else using a computer on the same network or working on any of the hardware at the time?

contact your ISP? happened to me once when I had lolverizon dsl. i forget the specifics other than a lot of pissed verizon customers, they fixed it after a couple days (happened on a friday so no fix until monday). was a little different though.. i was able to connect, but could not stay connected for longer than 5 minutes.

I tried cycling power on both router/modem twice, to no avail. Nobody else is on the internet at all at the moment besides me. Calling comcast to bitch now.

DOUBLE WTF

I just call up Comcast, a rather large ISP obviously. I get through their 5 minutes worth of push 1 for this, 2 for this, etc. At the end of all that it says, sorry due to large call volume you should just call back later. Fuck that.

rofl.

I complain about Time Warner but I somehow feel lucky in comparison to complaints I hear about Comcast.

What's that Fodder? Is it something I can fix?

Internet not properly working for the roommates either.

At first it sounded like a dns issue, but you'd have problems using your browser if that was the case (you're ultmals.com dns record would have exipred by the time you rebooted, cycled, etc). Makes me think its a routing problem, maybe a router down the line from you (on the ISP) blew up or some shit. If that is the case not a damn thing you can do.

Try changing your login server from login.oscar.aol.com on aim to 64.12.161.185, see if that works.

Well Garret, I heard that the Palin Porno hit the internets today, and as a result the Internet for the entire Bible Belt is shot for at least the next week. While you are on the East Coast, I can't help but think there could be a corrilation... I think the only way you are going to be able to get your FFXI back is to go door to door in your city and ask everyone you talk to, to stop downloading porn and just go buy the DVD.

You are trying to tell Garret how to change his AIM login server... this is the same guy I sat on AIM one night explaining how to hook up a second hard drive and CD-ROM into his computer when he was in college........

Start > Run > type cmd > hit enter

type ipconfig /release > wait until finished
type ipconfig /renew > wait until finished.

When you cycle the power to the modem and router, make sure you unplug the router from the modem before turning them back on. Don't know exactly why, but sometimes communication issues crop up when power is cycled and everything is still connected.

If that stuff doesn't work, take comfort in knowing that you have the shittiest broadband internet service provider in America. Literally, they hate their fucking customers. I'm pretty sure while you're on the phone with a rep, they're doing nothing but making a slow jerking-off motion while talking to you.

Comcast now has some message up about service issues in my area. Guessing there isn't jack I can do.

How is Verizon DSL in comparison to Comcast? It's really the only other possible service in my area.

I'd take Verizon dsl over comcast any day, the only shit part about dsl is the price is a little high for the speed unless you sign a 12 month contract. You should see if Verizon FiOS is in your area.

If you can get FiOS I would highly recommend it. Sadly it isn't in my area yet but as soon as it is I am getting it. Friend of mine has it and its fucking awesome.
