I've been thinking for a while about what's been shown so far and it's hard to be optimistic. I'm someone who dislikes the current Paladin because I find it boring, and the Evolved version we've seen is an even simpler version of the current one with a couple minor differences added. So it looks very boring. The devs have talked so much about accessibility that I worry that tanks will generally be as simple as Evolved Paladin.
How am I supposed to look forward to simpler tanks, when tanks are already barely interesting to play? Most of what they do now is 1 2 3, trying to avoid overcapping on resources, and pressing cooldowns on time. Is even that too complicated, and now we need tanks that are simpler? Since I've felt frustrated with the simplification that most jobs have been getting for the last new years, this just makes me frustrated again. It's especially worrying when tanks are currently similar to each other in terms of how complicated they are. Will there be a tank that's not simpler every currently existing job? I understand not wanting the 2 minute cycle, but please don't make all tanks this boring.
I'm also annoyed by having so many less buttons. I specifically enjoy having buttons to press. I play on controller, I can do my rotations properly when raiding, I have extra buttons on my hotbars for food, out-of-combat things like Teleport and summoning my chocobo, and for some raids I even put extra chat macros on my hotbars to call out things like Doomtrain's spread/stacks or all the stored mechanics for M21S P2 Idyllic Dream. I feel like I'm being told that something I've been able to do and enjoy is something that's too hard for me and not fun for me. I know there's people that do want less buttons, and it's good that they can have something they like more, but I really don't like how the amount of buttons seems to be universally cut down so much.
In general, I want more instead of less, and the mentality from the devs that we saw at fanfest just feels infantilizing. They want accessibility accessibility accessibility accessibility accessibility accessibility. As someone who's able to enjoy the game and likes a challenge, it feels like I don't exist. Please show us a tank that is a lot more interesting than Evolved Paladin. Tanks being unique from each other won't matter if they all end up so simple and boring.
If they do end up all being simple, then encounter design has to be improved and changed beyond our possible expectations if the experience is not going to just be downgraded compared to what we have now. For example it we end up just getting more fast and chaotic things like UCOB Nael phase or M2S Alarm Pheromones, then that'll just have us playing simpler classes in content that's similar to what can already exist.
