There's something that has bugged me a lot in CC, and it's about the difference between having damage versus having control over a fight.
For example, machinist hits hard. Bard is big-time support. But ninja and samurai have abilities that let them control how individual encounters happen. Ninja LB for example - if you're below 50% HP, the ninja can chain a bunch of assassinations. Compare that to Machinist. You target someone, deal a bunch of damage and maybe off them unless they've got guard up. It doesn't have the same opportunity to swing the whole match.
A machinist getting focused by a ninja can't respond with equal mobility or survivability. Being ranged in and of itself isn't enough reason to have fewer escape options. Some jobs have a ton of ways to react in various situations and some have, well, virtually none. I really wish I could be a fly on the wall when SE started working on the design philosophy for CC.
