Greetings and Salutations!
As you may or may not have heard, FF 11 is expected to get it's expanded free trial in September this year. I wanted to make a quick write-up for new players who are interested in the two.
Before we begin, a little about me: I'm a veteran from 2008 on Ramuh. My highest lvl back then was a 52 paladin, but both of my brothers were 75, with one of them being in the end game linkshell The After Life (if you know that one, let me know). Now, I currently reside in Bahamut helping new players and doing end game stuff. I enjoy a challenge as well as hoarding furniture and glamour in my mog house. Currently, I have done most of all challenges in game, including 4/7 master trials (FF11's version of ultimates), Odyssey v25 on all tiers (victories are debatable) and Sortie 9/9 bosses (I've even done the infamous Sortie Hard Mode before SE deleted it. Man that was fun...)
To start, FF 11 is getting an expanded free trial. For character creation, you will have access to all servers except the locked down ones (Asura, Bahamut and Odin). This is due to population control and rmt bots. You can choose to play as a Hume (hyur), Elvaan (Elezen but with longer necks), Mithra (mi'qote, but the men are house husbands and breeding slaves, so you can only play women -thats not a joke), Galka (Hrothgar without the cat side) and Tarutatu (disproportionate lalafels, but better)
Here are some things to expect coming in:
That's everything I can think of at the top of my head. For any FF 11 veterans among us, feel free to pitch in as well. That said, FF 11 is a journey, not a sprint. Be sure to enjoy your time on Vana'Diel, future adventurers.

Here are some things to expect coming in:
- Lvl cap on free trial is 75 (the og cap)
- You will only have access to the base game expansions. (Mission ranks 1-5 i believe)
- Free Trial is locked to solo play with no trading, no auction house access, no bazaar and no party forming (subscription players can invite you however). You will be accompanied by npc minions known as Trusts! They are quite powerful at your level.
- A subscription player can invite free trial players and form alliances with other players. Theoretically, you can play with a crew of 16/18 maximum players in 1 murder party! (There will be an xp penalty for parties past 6 members)
- FF11 has a level down system if you lose too much xp. If you've done Eureka, you'll be very familiar.
- Unlike FF14, FF11 does not require the party to break up during certain story sections. This means you can all do the story together!
- gil cap is 100k. But at least you get a free house (no more stinky inns with unwashed sheets)
- You cannot use yell/shout/tell functions
- You cannot join the special Unity Concord system (darn)
- Gil is difficult to earn as a free trial. The best way is actually to do certain high tier boss fights at specific level ranges.
- Endgame content for the new free trial includes:
- Burning Circle instance boss fights (3 - 18 players depending on the fight)
- World roaming notorious monsters
- Dynamis (high tier gear and relic weapon creation)
- Void Walker notorious monsters
- Garrison defense
- Ballista and Monstrosity (pvp. Not very active outside of events)
- - I believe you may have access to Trial of the Magian? This is a way to grind some powerful gear and upgrade others. (BE WARNED, YOU CAN UPGRADE GEAR PAST THE 75 CAP. THIS IS NOT REVERSIBLE)
- You will have access to the following starter jobs. Dont be fooled, these jobs pack lots of tools for endgame too!
- - warrior (high dps, heavy armor and can off tank in a pinch)
- - monk (high durability and steady dps)
- - thief ( evasion and burst damage. The only job with positionals)
- - white mage (dedicated healer. Capable of some nice damage, especially against undead)
- - black mage (magic damage specialist)
- - red mage (support and debuff specialist. Can solo dangerous mobs with preparation)
- At lvl 30, you can get access to advanced jobs:
- - Paladin (main tank with healing. Also packs anti undead tools)
- - dark knight (heavy dps with magic support. Can off tank and debuff in a pinch)
- - ranger (dedicated ranged dps. Can gear for melee too)
- - beast master (pet job, solo specialist and can support with some interesting builds)
- - summoner (pet job with high mp. HEAVILY NERFED IN FREE TRIAL DUE TO NOT HAVING ALL PETS)
- Unlike FF14, FF11 allows you to have 2 jobs at the same time. This includes your main job, and one support job. You gain most abilities of your support job, but at half of the level of your main job. Be sure to level your support jobs to gain abilities.
- This means, you can make interesting combinations such as; warrior with support white mage for a pseudo paladin, monk with support thief for positions etc.
- Crafting is capped at 110 for one dedicated craft, and 70 for all others. So you can only choose one. That said, with 70 in all crafts, you can make a ton of gear, with some gear being best in slot via crafting. Famous examples include Haubergeon, Vermillion cloak, Scorpion Harness etc. (I believe lvl 110 is not possible for free trial due to materials being locked to certain zones, let alone the ability to level up to that high)
- FF11 has a horizontal upgrade system. This means older gear can be useful well past its level range. Loved examples include leaping boots, lvl 12 boots that last until 30's, your lvl 1 nation ring that lasted until around mid 30, haubergeon and scorpion harness, lvl 45 armors that last until 75, optical hat, lvl 40 hat that was used for a very long time (I believe around mid 80's?), Kraken Club, a lvl 68 club that attacks up to 8 times and is still being used today, and many more.
- Relic weapons are their own category. While you can "buy" them as a sub player (via buying materials), free trial will need to farm the materials the hard way. Assuming dedication, you will have a relic in around 6 months give or take (that's not a joke, and that's me being generous). Completing a relic weapons grants you a Best in Slot weapon for those jobs at that level of base game. Some of them are best in slot even today for subscription players at lvl 99 depending on the situation and once they are upgraded. (except Claustrum. Sorry black mage :/ )
That's everything I can think of at the top of my head. For any FF 11 veterans among us, feel free to pitch in as well. That said, FF 11 is a journey, not a sprint. Be sure to enjoy your time on Vana'Diel, future adventurers.
