I have been spent my entire existence in FFXIV trying to be the best Onion Knight possible, even down to my character's name (Shallot Liltian).
With 7.4 finally lifting glamour restrictions, that meant the Onion Armor (previously exclusive to Dragoon/Reaper) could finally be worn as Paladin, allowing for it to be united, at long last, with the Onion Shield.
Onion Helm, Onion Armor, Onion Gauntlets, Onion Sarouel, Onion Boots, and Onion Shield.
However, there is no Onion Sword in Final Fantasy XIV. The set can't truly be called complete without a suitable weapon, right?
Thankfully, I think I found the best possible candidate, both aesthetically and keeping with what little established lore we have concerning the Onion Knights of eld.
The Empyrean Blade
● Onion Knights were elite warriors of the Allagan Empire. The entire set (save for the helm) can be obtained from the Labyrinth of the Ancients, an Allagan ruin, and the shield from Rowena, who plundered said ruin after we cleared the way for her.
● The robotic Onion Knight replicas found in the Fractal Continuum all wield High Allagan weaponry.
● The Empyrean Blade uses the same model as the High Allagan Blade.
● The Onion Knight clone from Eureka Orthos wears a pair of High Allagan Gloves of Healing which gives further credence to the notion that High Allagan gear existed and was used by Onion Knights at the point in history when they existed.
● The Empyrean Blade bears a striking resemblance to the Onion Sword in both the Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster and Final Fantasy III DS/3D.
● The creator of Heaven on High (and thus, the Empyrean weapons) was a survivor of the Allagan Empire's destruction and directly name drops two characters from Final Fantasy III's story; Desch and Princess Salina. He could even have been a former Onion Knight himself based on his apparent battle prowess in designing the tower's many trials (which includes a clone of Emperor Xande and other Crystal Tower raid bosses).
All of these details weave together to form a poetic justification to use the Empyrean Blade as the perfect analogue for FFXIV's Onion Sword, wouldn't you agree?
