I've been taking it slow with the game and just leveled my fourth job to enter Heavensward to keep playing level-appropriate quests. Made it almost to 60 as WAR before I made it through ARR, hence the multiple jobs around level 50. Three of these are tanks; I haven't unlocked gunbreaker yet, since I presume it also starts at sixty like the dancer.
To the actual point: I love how tanking works in this game. The most stressing part is surviving big pulls with minimal mitigation available, especially if you've powerleveled running low level dungeons (hello, new sprouts!) and then get thrown into a higher level dungeon with crappy gear. Lesson learned: keep your tanks geared even when the game keeps throwing you into the same starter dungeons all day. That morbol fruit dungeon scarred me, lol.
I'm slowly learning boss moves that I can mitigate for the whole party, or when to actually use mitigation instead of saving them for later. (From what I noticed when leveling a conjurer, big pulls are more intense than boss battles, at least in ARR levels.) So, even though it's the same dungeon for the umpteenth time in three days, there's always more to learn. Sure, I haven't run many hard dungeons, I'm still stressing about being a dumbass when actual tactics are employed, so I might change my mind soon when skill starts playing an actual role.
My only complaint is about all the tactics that aren't made clear for us console players. It took me way too long to find out how to deal with Doom, since I can't hover over the icon without spending like 10 seconds first trying to target it, then reading the tooltip. Or that I need to get rid of growing DoTs by eating fruit. There are a lot of similar examples, so I'm grateful to all the party members taking the time to explain stuff to me, the dumbass whose job is to stand still and occasionally step outside obvious damage effects.
All in all, tanking has been surprisingly chill in FFXIV compared to my (very limited) past experience in WoW. Sure, I might switch to DPS when the content gets harder, but at these lower levels acting as the party's (meat) shield is still fun and surprisingly chill. If you're interested in trying it out, my advice is to grab a gladiator or marauder and start at level 1. You'll unlock skills gradually while leveling, instead of having to worry about lots of mitigation and other tool options at higher levels. At least take one of them to level 30 before trying out the dark knight or gunbreaker.
I'm looking forward to trying out bastion. And yes, I can see why paladin takes the title of another main tank in Evercold—the amount of different mitigations is amazing. And it doesn't hurt to descend from the sky to slice open a pack of mobs. Yes, my highest DPS is a dragoon, rofl.
Sincerely, a tall femroe who loves to cast a protective shadow over the rest of the party.
