When you first meet him, Thancred doesn't have a necklace around his neck. But when you get back from the Sylph investigation, he has gained a necklace with a dark crystal attached. In between when you last see him at the end of the Ifrit Arc and the start of the end of the Sylph arc, he's been possessed by Lahabrea. Honestly a super cool touch the devs didn't need to add.
