I may be illiterate, but if I'm correct (and I'm rarely correct), the catalyst for the Dragonsong War was:
I know there's a whole lot of gray in this war, but do you justify Nidhogg's actions, and think he could've been saved from himself before it's too late?
(edit: i know his canon title isn't Corpse Eater, but i threw it in because i thought it'll be funny)

- King Thordan I was greedy for power and sought the dragon's eyes.
- He led his knights to kill Ratatoskr, steal and devour her eyes, which led them to grow exponentially stronger than they imagined
- Nidhogg found out and sought a song of revenge against the Dragoons of Eld for his murdered and deformed brood sister, which led to Thordan's death, the Dragoons fighting back, and the Corpse Eater's retreat
