Post guideline says "Add context to your title (i.e. "[Spoiler: 5.4]")." but I don't know what number Heavensward is, so forgive the long title. It's about The Vault! T_T
Haurchefant was my absolute favorite character and I never saw his death coming the way I did with Moenbryda, who was a bit of a genki girl nerd, a ray of sunshine just asking to be written off.
He was so down to earth, he was kind to us while still being a little cheeky, he took us in when we were refugees (saying Ishgardian inhospitality may actually work to our favor this time!). He asked his dad to take us as wards. When we went to defend Ishgard's bridge, he was worried sick. He said he'd cheer for us if we ever lose heart in the trial for heresy. He's just a chill guy looking cute in his little haven out here in the snowy lands.
He was never entitled to our help, nor did I ever feel like he was intentionally trying to be endearing to me as the player. He was already our bro early on in ARR so I never felt like he was slotted into HW just to... you know. He was just the most reliable ride-or-die NPC I've met. Not a valiant nonchalant nor overzealous knight, just your boy next door who appreciates and supports you!
After he died in my arms, it took me half an hour of freaking out to my friends and mourning him before I went any further. With a thousand yard stare, I thought, Alphinaud I see the checkmark above you, just give me the exp. When he said we're heading back to Fortemps Manor to see the count, and went, "oh shit, we're the ones responsible for his son dying in the first place!" T_T Witnessing him falling to his knees after he tried to start with a barely composed "Don't. Please." after saying stuff about knighthood and whatnot... ugh, that broke my heart!
Ain't that so sad! Cos one of the last interactions we saw between him and the Count was Haurchefant saying: "A knight lives to serve, Father─to aid those in need! The people need Ser Aymeric─more than ever─and we may be his only hope! There is no greater calling for a knight than to save the life of his fellow man. I swear to you, on the sigil of our house, that I shall do this and make you proud."
And he did.
