... kill Sphene and then basically just bring her right back?

And I get it: the Sphene we killed was the Endless version, and was essentially a different entity entirely. However, it felt (to me) almost like Graha 2.0 - the character (or at least, the character that we had familiarized ourselves with) had perished, and then, whoops, here comes the replacement, good as new. With Graha 5 years ago, I was reminded of Cait Sith's "grand sacrifice" in the OG FF7, where he gets smushed in the crushing down of the Temple of the Ancients, only to pop back in two seconds later... and I got kind of the same vibe with this.

Granted, I don't dislike Sphene. In fact, other than her name (which... just isn't particularly great, especially when duo'd with 'queen' [and had my wife continuously intentionally mistitling her "Queen Spleen"), I really enjoyed my interactions with her - with both versions, in fact. And I'm not sitting here wishing her dead.

But it feels slightly emotionally dishonest to kill off a major player only to revive them moments later. Even comic books often have the decency to leave a key character dead for a little while before bringing them back to life.
