Last night I finally hit this part of the game.
For context, I’m a sprout with a fair couple of months into the game (I played most of ARR about half and a year ago before dropping the game because…post ARR; ended up coming back and staying FOR GOOD around April).
Now, I have enjoyed the game way more than I anticipated, specially after my particular rough start with it. I loved HW and still think about that story at random moments while at work, I genuinely enjoyed Stormblood despite my few grievances towards it since it ended up introducing me to some of my favorite characters and individual storylines so far, and thus did I plunge into Shadowbringers.
Now, even before picking up the game the first time I was aware of how highly regarded ShB is throughout FFXIV community, the FF fans in general and even within the MMO genre itself. That being said, I was a bit worried that maybe (foolishly so), just maybe my expectations were raised too damn high and it wouldn’t be able to meet them.
Ever since starting Shadowbringers I did enjoyed it bit by bit, some of the new areas were the most beautifully designed, music was peak, story was engaging and the main cast story arc was really holding me hostage in a good way…but as I progressed further and saw kinda where all this was going I couldn’t help but feel that my concerns were partially true and that, while it would be a very good experience, would not meet the great “hype” I was subjected to (im not sure if back in the day when it released, the Exarch reveal actually surprised people, but I kinda put everything together fairly easy and saw that twist coming a mile away).
Boy was I wrong. As early as the arc in preparation to reach Mt. Gulg, things definitely started to pick up the pace in a very epic way, and by the time I finally unlocked The Dying Gasp I simply knew that I experienced one of the “the” gaming experiences of my lifetime…and that’s putting it shortly. Hell, I didn’t even know I was able to cry while being excited, while also having chills but also sweating within a room at cold temperature, but seems like I can.
TL;DR: Even after a bit of skepticism, I now understand all the praise behind this expansion and am I so glad I was able to experience it blindly, this has been the true definition of FFXIV peak for me.
I apologize for the long read/rant/glaze post, I just genuinely had to get this off my chest not even 24 hours after experiencing this masterpiece. Heck, I sure know I will get off work in an hour just to go back home and replay the entire cutscene sequence again for the pure enjoyment.
