So, when I was entering FFXIV for the first time and making my character, I wanted to read a bit up on it, figure out the lore and so on, to make my character. I decided to go for miqo'te and Seeker of the Sun, mostly for aesthetic reasons, and found the official forum post(s) that explain some general lore for the playable races and the nomenclature.
In it, Gildrein writes this about the miqo'te nunh:
"Nunh status does not equate to leadership within a tribe, and in fact, very few nunh ever become leaders."
It annoyed me for years that, whenever we met a Seeker tribe, it was fairly obvious that the nunh was, in fact, the leader of the tribe. I did not understand how the writers could be inconsistent with a pretty clear lore detail, when they are actually good at showing women in leader positions elsewhere. I have been bothered by this for years now, until I sat down and reread some summaries of the miqo'te.
My post became too long for my 3 000 character-limit, so to make it easier, go to this post and search "lead", and you will see that, beyond the one mention from the "Naming Conventions" posts, everywhere else it seems like Seeker culture associates nunhs, and perhaps men in general, as leaders. Since the posts were released in 2013, from the U-tribe in 2.0 released the same year, to the EE1 book released in 2016, to the M- and J-tribes in 4.0 released in 2017, to the EE2 lorebook released in 2018, to even the Hhetsarro clan in 7.0 in 2024, there has NEVER been a case where the "nunh≠leader"-claim has been the case.
After all this, I have come to wonder if Gildrein misunderstood the lore when he was writing the post, because it simply does not work with the lore we have gotten in the game, and in two of the three official lorebooks, both which were written YEARS after he released (and never edited) his posts. Perhaps instead of being "nunhs are rarely leaders", it was meant to be "nunh is not the same as leader, but nunhs are rarely NOT leaders", or "nunhs are rarely leaders of anything outside of their tribes", like how U'odh Nunh is clearly the leader of the U-tribe, but he will never be the leader of, say, the Company of Heroes, without relinquishing his Nunh title.
Even so, that is one really weird way to word it, that is very easily to confuse new players, like me, who thought it meant "nunh is the breeding male, not the leader, and someone else will be the actual chief of the tribe", and it sucked to be confused and ultimately frustrated by the game's "lore inconsistencies" for years.
Am I missing something here? I would love some help to understand why this has been going on for 13 years without it being edited anywhere.
