I'm sure this topic has been discussed before, but I'd like to bring it up again, particularly regarding raids and trials, but also dungeons.
I suffer from photosensitive epilepsy, CPS/FIAS (complex partial seizures/focal impaired-awareness seizures), and tonic-clonic seizures, alongside other neurological problems. Unfortunately, I've experienced difficulties with the intense flashing lights and visual effects from both players abilities and enemy/boss attacks.
I know we can reduce other players battle effects, and I've already done so. This option has been an absolute godsend! However, my main concern is that there doesn't seem to be an equivalent option for effects coming from monsters and bosses.
I've managed to reach the Dawntrail expansion and have had an amazing experience so far, with plenty of help from other players. Unfortunately, that changed when I encountered The Arcadion, which I had to abandon rather quickly because its visual effects triggered my seizures.
I've also heard from other players that several upcoming dungeons and encounters contain similarly intense flashing effects. This genuinely worries me and has made me anxious about continuing to play, as I never know when another encounter might trigger a seizure.
Before anyone suggests that I should simply stop playing, that's not what I'm asking for. I genuinely love FFXIV and want to enjoy all the content like everyone else. It's incredibly discouraging to feel that parts of the game are inaccessible because playing them could put my health at risk.
I do my best to make my gaming environment comfortable, adjust the room lighting and keep my medication within reach. However, I'd really appreciate SE considering additional accessibility options, such as:
Options to reduce or simplify enemy and boss visual effects.
Reduced intensity, brightness and frequency of flashing effects.
Alternative visual indicators for attacks instead of intense flashing animations.
Clearer photosensitivity warnings for encounters containing potentially problematic effects.
I understand that visual effects are important for communicating mechanics and making encounters engaging. I'm not asking for mechanics to be removed or made easier, just for alternative ways to display them without unnecessary visual intensity.
I'd also love to hear from other players who experience photosensitivity or epilepsy. Have you encountered similar problems? Have you found any settings or workarounds that help?
I'm not here to attack SE or criticise the developers, or attack anyone! I simply want to raise awareness of an accessibility concern that can have very real consequences for players like myself.
FFXIV is a wonderful game, and I hope that players with photosensitive epilepsy can be given more options to enjoy everything it has to offer.
Thank you for taking your time to read this <3
