FFXIV has always been extremely referential to the rest of the series, with some people calling it a “Final Fantasy Theme Park” (something I can agree with too). And yes, being self referential is also part of final fantasy’s DNA, with how jobs and summons are mainstay ideas that always show up.
But coming off of Endwalker and Dawntrail, which referenced FF4 and FF9 to the extent that you had plot beats, characters, and music being lifted straight from those games, im kinda hoping that Evercold makes the pivot to being a mostly “ffxiv original” again in its ideas.
Don’t get me wrong, as a long time final fantasy fan i get a big kick out of seeing my favorite games get referenced again and remixed in fun new ways that widen the scope of ffxiv’s world. But I feel like im at a point where i want to see the team really spread their creative wings, and present a Final Fantasy story that is uniquely theirs, without trying to call back to anything we had in the past. Like I hope when we look back at Evercold in the future, we don’t say stuff like “Oh it was the FFX / FFXIII Expansion”, which again, would not be a bad thing per se, but I hope we get something wholly new and fresh instead.
Plus, since Both our alliance and normal raids are collabs this time around, they have the perfect opportunity to condense all their originality into the msq.
