I am not brand new to FFXIV, but due to life circumstances, it has been almost five years since I've been able to play the game. So, I decided instead of logging back into my old character (whom I love to bits) and having to relearn everything and contend with half-remembered plot details, I'd rather create an alt and start a new run of the game from the very beginning. Be a Sprout once more.
As a bonus experience, I'll be tackling playing on the controller for the first time, along with all the learning that will entail. This, coupled with the graphics update and me having been absent for so long almost gives the entire game a fresh, new experience for me.
My choices in Data Centers currently are Primal and Dynamis, and I chose Primal because of the larger population. I ended up picking Hyperion as my new home server after doing some research, and I have to say I feel validated in my decision thus far.
Because despite it being late at night in NA, Ul'dah was still fairly populated (I've never done the Ul'dah start, so this is all fresh for me). More importantly, everyone has been very kind. Twice now I have gotten out of a cutscene only to find myself surrounded by a small crowd of players, welcoming me to the game. Giving me gifts, Gil, performing celebration emotes and generally being very lovely. I had forgotten how sweet this community can be at its best, and my first few hours back in Eorzea as a returning Sprout have already brought a smile to my face.
