My boyfriend says if I choose not to join a free company with them it's like im disrespecting them. Is it really that important?

I don't play mmos and just started the game and don't know anything about the dynamics of how important these game aspects are. Is it really that disrespectful to not join one with them. Is it really that emotionally heartbreaking if I want to be in one without them too?
