I’ve been an mmo player my entire life, ever since the days of Ultima and SWG. Played most MMO’s over the years, but FF14 was one of the few that just never clicked.
It felt clunky to me at first, I can’t remember why. IIRC there also used to be two different login menus which bugged me. I’ve never been a weeb & I’d be lying if I said the tails and bunny ears didn’t put me off. I digress.
Various tries consisting of short stints. The fact that I bought the game on release and had to sub to try the game, when a new account could have so much also bugged me. Stupid, I know.
So I’ve always ended up bouncing back to two Franchises - WoW and GW:
So I was at a lull. I’ve spent most of this year bouncing from mmo to mmo, from BDO to LOTRO. Today I was extremely bored and watched a stream. FF14 has been everything I’ve always wanted to on paper, but could never get into. So, I have a go.
I couldn’t tell you what or why exactly, but today it’s clicked. I’ve spent all evening playing. The game feels cosy, the combat nice, heavy on the rpg elements, game and OST are beautiful, rotations aren’t spammy?. it seems story heavy (and apparently ARR is the worst?!), the world is so active and the community so far has been nice. I love the controller support and the fact that it’s cross platform.
I’m actually excited. It may just be a honey moon phase, but I can’t wait to binge it this weekend and experience many years of content!

WoW retail has become a slog, plus everything I liked such as lore went down the toilet years ago. Classic is a snapshot of time, the golden days which we will never experience again. Plus Blizzard have become so greedy…I can’t support them anymore.
GW2 just felt like I had a checklist for the sake of it. Grinding for QOL with high apm, spammy rotations that didn’t feel impactful. The gem-walled basic QOL annoys me, the story is terrible and quality has been a downward slope for years. GW1 was amazing, until todays new additions which has been A nail in the coffin for me.
