Hey, level 60 astromancer here.
i am proud to say that i get it now.
see, i played through all of ARR not caring for the story. i did try, because i knew from people that it was a big deal in this game, and if i skipped it all, i wouldn't have that much fun in the end. so i tried. but despite all my efforts, i couldn't bring myself to be invested in this story, and even now, i would still say that ARR's story, is IMO, pretty bad in every way.
and i was so sad, because i wanted to love this game, so many people do ! they seem to have fun. i have fun. dungeons are fun, the gold saucer is fun, the map is great, and the music is awesome.
played through the start of heavensward, and couldn't really, if at all feel the jump in quality of writing and storytelling people were so hyped about.
but now, i get it. from the moment (still in HS) when Alphinaud gets emprisoned and we are taken to the trial by combat, everything went uphill. cutscenes, raids, dungeons, omg. its like another game!
i now am invested a lot in this story (and i kind of like Alphinaud which i HATED in ARR)
i see it now, why its that critically acclaimed mmorpg.
