I just started playing FFXIV last year in February. I posted on here in June last year about getting to 100 and completing the MSQ for the first time. A year and several months later, most of my perspective, my skill level, my more intimate understanding of the game, and my familiarity and ability to do content has drastically changed. A 20 year WoW convert, I figured it would just be 1:1 when I got into the basic nuance of playing FFXIV. Most of you here will know that it does not work like that.
I have cleared a few Extreme fights in DT, and I have a single, mediocre clear of M9S from sometime this past summer, but I just never had the nerve to PF.
After convincing friends to full complete PT with me, I got to talking with a few people about Q40 TFV and how it's supposed to be something of a mini ultimate. A mini ultimate that's about ten minutes long, requires you to switch between dark and light, beat two giant bosses that rock the party if they go too far apart that has no meaningful rewards other than a cool title, and a passport flex. So, with my 1 total Savage raid clears... I assembled a static of two friends and a rando from a DD Discord. I grinded out almost 1,000 Pilgrim's Potions for this god damn prog.
I main BLM, and I've always wiggled and moved too much. I did eventually manage to get a really firm grasp on how to properly do the rotation and how to really lock in when I need to super try, but I've never had to play anything exceedingly hard. Well... then I did 6 weeks of Q40 FTV prog two nights a week, with a double day on the second to last week of attempts.. hours and hours of getting fucking rocked by mental exhaustion and mechanics upon mechanics. Two of the players I was with are vets that have cleared most if not all savage tiers and lots of proper ultimates, so you can imagine I was worried about feeling like dead weight.
We fucking did it. It was quite a lot of stress leading up to the last night of attempts, and we finished it at the very end of the second lockout. This was such an insane challenge for my derpy BLM ass. This fight single handedly taught me why it ACTUALLY matters to properly weave spells/abilities. It's not just efficient, it's pretty much mandatory to keep your proper uptime. I've been taught to really lock the fuck in and not wiggle. I understand what it means to properly prep your entire rotation and spell order for a fight.. you really can just memorize it after you've thrown yourself at it a million times.
The Mourner of Light is a cool as hell title, and I feel so great about clearing this. Once Evercold comes out, I'm not going to just be 2 years behind everyone else on progression, and now with the skills I've finally started to build the muscle for, I intend to stay on curve for Savage raids.
I've come to learn since clearing that something around ~1% of all players ever have cleared Q40.
I think this one is really something you do for the challenge. I'm so glad I did this.
