I have entered housing lotteries for the past three months and lost every one.
Yesterday, I placed a bid on another plot and was the only entrant. When the results were posted today, there were 42 entries, and number 42 won.
I understand that this is how a lottery works, and I do not blame the player who won. The problem is that individual players are being pushed into increasingly crowded lotteries because there are not enough personal houses available.
This was also a mixed-use ward, meaning I was competing not only against other individuals, but potentially against Free Companies. An individual gets one entry, while a qualifying FC can submit multiple entries through different members. How is that a fair way to distribute a plot that can be used as either a personal or FC estate?
The development team has acknowledged for years that housing demand exceeds availability. We have received additional wards, ward reclassifications, apartments, and the lottery system, all presented as ways to improve access. Yet players are still fighting dozens of others over the same limited plots.
The lottery system may have eliminated placard clicking, but it did not solve the actual problem. It replaced hours of clicking with days of waiting before being told “better luck next time.” The process is less physically frustrating, but the scarcity remains.
Apartments are not an equivalent solution. They do not offer outdoor furnishings, gardening, house exteriors, multiple floors, or the same creative possibilities as an estate. Island Sanctuary is not a substitute either.
At some point, adding a few wards or changing which buyers can enter them stops being a solution. It becomes a temporary patch over a structural problem.
The housing system needs meaningful changes:
• More wards reserved for individual buyers
• Separate lotteries for Free Companies and private buyers
• Limits on how many FC members can bid on the same plot
• Genuine instanced housing with indoor and outdoor customization
• More transparency about the long-term housing plan
I love FFXIV, and housing is one reason I continue playing. I have the gil, meet the requirements, and participate exactly as intended. None of that matters when access is determined almost entirely by drawing the right number against dozens of other subscribers.
Players are not asking for a free mansion. We are asking for a realistic opportunity to participate in content that has been advertised, expanded, and repeatedly described as improved.
Acknowledging housing demand is not the same as solving it. The current system remains inadequate, and the development team needs to be honest about that.
