Did Thancred really do that after the Ifrit encounter? [Spoiler: ARR]

So im currently playing FFXIV again on an Alt to experience the Story after skipping it entirely on my Main. Im now finished with the fight against Ifrit and need some confirmation i understood what happened.

Did Thancred really kill off the people affected by Ifrits "Aura"?
