I have always been a very battle content focused individual, dungeons, raids, trials, etc. and completely disregarded crafting for the most part thinking it was just another kind of time sync that required a lot of gil and wasn't really worth doing, whatever I needed I would just buy from players who do craft if anything.
Something else that lead to this initial feeling is that I have played a lot of other MMOs and in these other games crafting was always very straightforward, kinda boring, and arguably not quite always worth it even at higher levels as you would get better stuff from battle content faster than you could craft it and lower level stuff quickly became worthless with the pace of the game, etc.
To put it simply, I was wrong about crafting in FFXIV.
I finally tried leveling up a crafter and learned quickly that FFXIV crafting is a lot more involved than crafting in other games. It requires so much more thought and planning and in my opinion it interweaves into every other part of the world in so many more ways than other MMOs do in my experience. There are also mountains of other reasons you would craft something in this game compared to others, say you want gear, cosmetics, buffs, minions, furniture, or gil, it all matters even at low levels.
Up until now I will be honest, I loved the game but it always felt somewhat surface level, like sure there was some other stuff going on aside from killing things and the story and leveling and I had battle content and leveling alt jobs and as much as it kept me occupied it all felt like it sort of just was the thing to do so that you could do it more? If that makes sense?
Since starting crafting I feel like a veil has been pulled from my eyes and I am starting to see the whole game for the complete experience that it is. It adds so much more enjoyment to every part of every thing, going through old dungeons and getting old gear is no longer just for XP roulettes, now I can desynthesize things and be on the lookout for rare materials. There's also just more to do, in this game crafting isn't just a time sync (it is) but it's also actually fun, you don't just gather materials and press go but you have to strategize about how to successfully craft. The hunt for valuable materials is also more fun and those materials are genuinely valuable in this game, it feels great especially treasure map hunting and tying back to that battle content in those ways.
Long story short, I feel like I have played half a game for the last 2000 hours of my time in FFXIV and I regret not getting into crafting sooner. I really encourage everyone to give it a go at least up until level 50 or 60 as that's about the point you will really start to realize the big stuff. It is actually really addicting and now I almost like it more than battle content. Thanks for bearing this rant!
