Could separating Main Tank and Off-Tank actually work in FFXIV?

I think it could work, but only if the difference is more meaningful than:

“One tank holds the boss, and the other waits for a tank swap.”

The Main Tank could focus on boss positioning, aggro, tankbusters, and keeping the fight stable.

The Off-Tank could have a more active role: managing the boss’s pressure through something like a Rage or Stamina system.

For example, the boss’s Rage could increase over time or after certain mechanics. If it gets too high, raid-wide damage becomes stronger or mechanics become more punishing.

The Off-Tank could reduce Rage, break Stamina, or weaken the boss during specific timing windows — not randomly at any time.

For example, if the boss casts Savage Roar while Rage is too high, it could become almost lethal. But if the Off-Tank breaks Stamina during the correct window, the attack becomes survivable.

There could also be offensive rewards. If the Off-Tank times it correctly, the party could gain a short damage bonus window. If they use it too early or too late, the party misses that reward.

This would give both tanks clearer identities:

Main Tank: controls boss position and fight stability.
Off-Tank: controls boss pressure and creates safer or stronger damage windows.

The key is to avoid making it too complicated. It should reward timing and awareness, not add unnecessary micromanagement.

So the question is:

Should Off-Tank remain mostly a backup tank, or become a true Boss Control Tank?
