Can i play the free trial with a friend? As of, we both will use the free trial

Hi! Me and a friend are interested in starting to play FFXIV. I am a very big fan o FF in general, although i have only played the first 6 entries and a few spin offs, my friend hasnt played any FF. We wanted to try the free trial, will the game let us play together, as forming a party or something similar? And, does the game have heavy spoilers about other Final Fantasies?
