I just wanted to say people do not give stormblood enough credit to storm blood. This is where the story to me actually felt like they matched a good pacing. People will hate me for saying this but heavens ward did not have good pacing at all, almost every main story quest has the ARR problem of “hey we have this thing happen so go talk to 5 different guys or wait at 5 different spots before we continue on.” Pacing was at a crawl when you’re going through base HW that I can’t even remember most of it. We got to ishgard, did a bunch of random things I think and then once estinien joins us that’s when the plot actually happens. Everything before was fluff, which was like a good 10-15 hours (I’m just throwing random numbers I don’t know how much it was but it felt long) meanwhile storm blood? Hey check it out we’re now going to fight back against the empire. meet the resistance but uh oh we’re actually low on moral and soldiers check out some consequences of 20 years of oppression and oh no! We got our asses kicked. The forces in ala Mihigo is too too! well then we’ll just have to force a war on two fronts then! While general raubahn helps the resistance gain more clout and successes for the alliance and the resistance, we’ll send a small scion force to help start a revolution in Doma drawing the empire’s resources to two separate areas around the world! There’s also just better characterization for the characters. Learning that alphinaud can’t swim and is a rich kid, seeing alisaie in action with lyse as they’re both headstrong ladies not being much for politics, lord hien was cool and a chill guy, gosetsu being the overall GOAT (especially post SB), wish we got more of yugiri but she was a real one for pulling up to zenos with us.
This is the ramblings of a man at 2am but man stormblood is really was the part of the game that made me realize I’m going to stick with the game. The only reason I took breaks from the story was because 7.4 released and I wanted to get my WOL looking cute before I beat Zeno’s and asahi’s ass. Also storm blood actually has like good side plots. The Red Sea was kind of a wall but it wasn’t too bad from what I remember. The most annoying part of it was that I didn’t know about the ferry skipper until way later so I just had to swim across the sea the whole time. After that everything was awesome!
TLDR: heavens ward feels like a better ARR, it still had the story structure of ARR “go here and talk to 5 guys before we allow you to progress in the story” sure the cool parts were cool but if 20% was cool but 80% was slog then I mean…meanwhile stormblood feels like an actually moving plot and everything you do moves the plot forward for a big pay off in the end. I think people are still just using talking points from way back when to describe stormblood because as a person that has experienced both recently, stormblood was peak.
