I’m playing FFXIV for the first time and I’m currently around level 15 in ARR. I started in Ul’dah, but I’ve also done the side quests in the other starting regions and created alts to experience the Limsa Lominsa and Gridania MSQ openings up to level 15.
I honestly didn’t expect to be this impressed by the side quests.
Sure, a lot of them are mechanically basic MMO quests: kill some creatures, collect something, deliver an item, etc. But if you actually read the dialogue, there’s a surprising amount of worldbuilding hidden in them.
You learn about culture, economy, agriculture, crafting, trade, transportation, wildlife, working conditions, and the everyday problems of ordinary people. And because I’ve experienced all three starting areas, I can already see how differently Ul’dah, Limsa Lominsa, and Gridania reflect their own environments, economies, and societies.
One thing I particularly appreciate is that guilds and organizations actually feel like they exist in the world. They’re mentioned in unrelated side quests, NPCs talk about them naturally, and their activities seem to affect life outside their own questlines. They feel like actual institutions rather than gameplay systems created solely for the player.
That’s worldbuilding.
I’m only level 15 and this is my first playthrough, so I have no idea how much deeper this gets. But I’m already really enjoying just stopping to listen to NPCs and learn how their little corner of Eorzea works.
