Hi all! I decided to do so after watching the Community Leader panel during Germany fan festival, where they discussed that the forums is the best place to make sure feedback is seen.
I'm simultaneously hopeful and apprehensive about the Action Skins system discussed at NA fan festival and elaborated further on at EU fan festival. So far, what we've seen is relatively simple: skins for teleportation and possible skins for weapon skill actions.
I'm hopeful because, if done correctly, I think this has the potential to massively increase the customizability of, and your immersion with, your Warrior of Light. However, I think that if it's implemented haphazardly, it might just feel like an afterthought. Let me explain...
I've seen lots of discussions online about how people are expecting most, if not all, of the alternate actions be cash shop exclusives. This is an issue, of course, but not the core issue to me. My issue with the implementation of this system is that there might be so few options that it'll feel undercooked: that is to say, there's one or two actions in the whole game that get these skins, and it stays like that for months or years before skins for other Actions get added.
I recognize that designing these animations and molding them to all of the possible character rigs with the FFXIV polish we expect is, likely, a colossal undertaking. This is why I have a few ideas on how to make the system not feel "undercooked" when it comes out
A) Bring back old, removed animations. This has been harped on to no end, so I won't go too far into depth on this one. All I'll say is that most classes (yes, most) have actions that have been removed that could easily just be a "skin" for actions. Examples: DRK's Plunge (my beloved), the old Golf Swing WAR Inner Chaos animation, the Stone family of spell animations for WHM's Glare III, and the list goes on.
B) Allow cross race/gender idle animations. One of my friends plays DRK as a male Hyur, and the difference in the idle animations for these is staggering; so much so that the two poses are, essentially, conveying completely different things. For those who are unfamiliar, the female DRK idle pose is sticking your sword in the ground and staring smugly forward, while the male DRK idle pose is sticking your huge sword over your shoulder and looking solemnly forward. Like I said, HUGE difference between what these two poses convey! And let's not even get into cross-race idle poses (literally - I ran out of characters). TL;DR - Adding these alternate idle poses as Action Skins would be a great way to spice up your WOL's personality simply though animations and poses.
I'd love to hear other people's opinions on these, or thoughts of their own. As I stated above, I'm very hopeful for this system, but I don't want to see it as something where we get one or two Action Skins on Evercold's release, and then we get one or two more every year or so.
