Zodiark's Sentience. [spoilers: Shadowbringers.]

It's been on my mind after revisiting ARR with the lore of SHB, I've been wondering just how Zodiark Himself feels about the history between Him and Hydaelyn. But after a lot of thinking and observation of His scenes, such as the ending of ARR or whenever Elidibus talks to Him, i've come to the conclusion that Zodiark is not sentient at all and is the equivalent of a Primal machine in mentality. It's very interesting that we never hear Him speak, such as when He shows up in crystal to us after ARR, or when Elidibus has scenes on the moon, the Emissary does not seem to be holding a two sided conversation.

Now let's look at the strange nature of his so-called tempered Ascians. Lahabrea is hinted to have his own agenda, as evidenced in the 2.5 patch quests, with Elidibus even realizing Lahabrea planned on initiating the 8th rejoining without his consent. Emet-Selch despite proclaiming himself tempered, doesn't really worship Zodiark that much or displays fanatical devotion to him. Indeed Emet-Selch is far more focused on the old world and how Zodiark is a means to an end to revive them, hell he's even willing to call a truce with us to understand the side of the Light better, again without the consent of Elidibus. And in patch 5.3 he actually aids us AGAINST Elidibus, who is the heart of Zodiark. Then we see Fandaniel who is as loyal to Zodiark, as Kefka is to Gestahl. Even Nabriales who proclaims loyalty to Zodiark and desires to be held in high regard by Him, expresses annoyance at Elidibus's orders, which is very interesting because Elidibus IS Zodiark and thus should be able to compel fanatical worship. Perhaps a side effect of being a Convocation fanboy? Or something else?

The lack of fanatical loyalty from his so-called tempered could be explained by the lack of a mind to control them, even Bismarck at least had an animalistic sense of sentience. Emet-Selch is so certain that Zodiark WILL revive his people and it never even comes to mind that Zodiark would refuse. So in a way, Zodiark could be considered just as much a slave to the Ascians as they are to him allegedly. He's not a God to worship but a means to an end to have their home back in essence. Look at how Ifrit's tempered act compared to the Ascians.

Even Hydaelyn can be called to question in this regard, She may talk more but it's entirely possible that Her dialogue is the equivalent of an NPC. It's just repeated to any potential Warrior of Light. Which gains a bit of credence in 5.2 since She's always talking to any potential echo bearers. Even in HW Her garbled up dialog is just Her ARR lines on repeat. Would be ironic if a primal who's mantra is hear feel think is incapable of doing so Herself. Which would explain why she needed Minfilia to be her voice.

So in conclusion, I think Zodiark is just an empty shell of a Primal that just does what it's ordered to, no different from a Machine. In a hellish situation the Ascians find themselves in, you don't need to be tempered to do what they did, just missing your loved ones and home. What do you guys feel?
