Yuyuyu Taught Me How To Be A Better Player

I rewatched that show recently. And although they are cutesy and trite, the Hero Club five tenets really do help get you in the right mindset for playing group content, dispell Tanksiety or Healer Rage and just enjoy things more.

I had always been afraid of maining a tank class in any MMO before. In fact, I have only ever DPSed or been Shanghaied into healing. In Shadowbringers, I decided to leave my comfort zone and make the switch over to DRK- which has always seemed to me like a fun class. And it is.

So here are the five tenets, and how I feel they apply to FFXIV.

1) Always give a proper greeting.

Whether it's your first time in a dungeon and you are steel reeling from the latest story patch or your 12th time in Prae this week, saying hi to your fellow players- and being jolly in general- goes a long way to improving the experience for you and them.

2) Try not to give up.

The game can be frustrating at times- sometimes you are the bad player, who is messing things up and having a hard time learning, sometimes someone else in your party is. But you won't get better unless you keep at it, and neither will they. It's 'try not to' not 'never' give up because sometimes you need to take a break, and that's fine too.

3) Sleep well, eat well.

You may not realise itself, but you suck at the game when you are tired. It'll still be here when you get up. Look after yourself IRL and you'll enjoy the game more.

4) If you're troubled, talk to someone.

Telling people you are new or don't understand a mechanic is fine. Asking for help with content is fine. Asking your tank to slow down if you are overwhelmed by wall to wall pulls is fine. Some people are dicks, but just because some people are is no reason to close up.

5) You're likely to succeed if you try.

Don't be afraid of trying new content or trying a new job or role. So what if you suck at tanking, or healing, or the new raid? Sucking at something is the first step towards being kinda good at it. And you might surprise yourself- just because a fight is new, doesn't mean all the mechanics are. You've probably seen divebombs or towers or cleaves or stacks or tethers before. So do what you know, figure out what you don't, and have fun doing it.
