What are ffxiv's "Content Islands"?

I was comparing xiv to some other MMO's to a friend a while ago and began wondering this question. If you're unfamiliar with the term, it originates (afaik) from the Warframe community. Lotta definitions for the term go around there, but the one that I see most is "A system that is only loosely connected to the main game, and mainly serves as busywork for the player which only makes progress on itself."

Some definitions try to talk about the quality of "Evergreen" Rewards (rewards you can get infinitely) vs unique rewards, but I think that's a bad metric.

A good example I can think of in xiv is Chocobo Racing, Triple Triad, and the rest of the Gold Saucer activities. Are they required at any point in MSQ? Nope. Do they help you complete MSQ faster or better? Not at all, it's only mount, minion, fashion, and orchestration rolls as rewards.

PvP is (intentionally) a content island, given that it has it's own currency and rewards, and you can "complete" PvP by getting all the achievements/getting all the unlocks.

An argument could absolutely be made that Beast tribes are content islands by the same metric, along with their daily limit, but I would argue there is incentive to do them regardless due to the large xp gain you get even after maxxing out the rep and getting all the unique rewards.

What other ones come to mind?
