Hello. Over the past couple weeks, I've been receiving the following error on a random but frequent basis: "an unexpected error has occurred, exiting FINAL FANTASY XIV.(17)". I've had it before on incredibly rare occasions when I was having issues with Windows Update, but out of the blue it got worse.
Primarily on Siren (Aether) and Brynhildr (Crystal), I will crash at random times, up to five times in a row. I can be exploring the open world for quests, repairing my gear at merchants, in a class quest cutscene, or immediately at the loading screen when exiting dungeons. Then it occurs at the loading moogle every time I try to log back in after a crash. What fixes it is completely random: sometimes it works by running the launcher as admin, sometimes it works just logging back in normally. Other times I have to fully shut down the computer, disconnect it from the power, then plug it back in and reboot.
I have noticed patterns for these random crashes: it usually occurs during peak server times (around 9PM EST), in crowded places (Gridania, Limsa, Mor Dhona, Eulmore, etc), and only on NA data centers. I'm able to play on my main EU alt all day on a regular basis (since I raid weekends) and have no problems at all. I'm also able to consistently play for long periods (around a couple hours) in the early morning or afternoon with no trouble. The game runs perfectly fine before these crashes: almost no input lag, no internet problems, sometimes slow loading of gear icons but nothing else.
I've tried all the regular troubleshooting short of reinstalling the game, which is the only option I have left, and will try it when I have time. I've run the launcher as admin, I've updated all my NVIDIA drivers, I've updated my wireless drivers, I've verified my internet connection, I've updated Windows (with the exception of the most recent optional update because it's extremely buggy and unfixed), and I've run CCleaner routinely to clear unwanted files. The only thing that's changed on my computer over the past couple weeks is I installed and set up my drawing tablet and a new art program. I've already spoken to support through chat and their only solution for me was to reinstall, but they couldn't explain why it was happening on some servers but not others.
Has anyone else had problems like this recently? Specifically this error code? How did you fix it? I'm finding little information on this on Reddit and in the forums and this issue's become incredibly frustrating and disheartening.
