So I admit, I'm not a main healer in FFXIV, but I have played all mainline, and many side FF games, so I love to theorize and craft what jobs could be blended into FFXIV. I have at least gotten WHM to 99 and SCH to 90 back in EW and I understand that from a gameplay and content perspective that they are efficient at healing, but in-between heals, and in casual content they are pretty much boring 1 button dps. Nothing was worse than queuing MS Roulette as healer and just spamming 1 on my keyboard for 30 minutes straight.
That being said, I think a great job for 8.0 would be Cleric and they could be equipped with Mace/Shield, Flail/Shield, 2H Mace, or 2H flail. I absolutely love abstract classes, so having a melee based healer would actually make me even give healing a try. And I think they would focus more on light single target healing, and heavy AOE healing, and instead of just spamming healing abilities on friendlies, you would instead do your normal dps rotation and as you deal damage you'd heal nearby allies (think of a team based Bloodwhetting) and then your big heals would be putting a buff called "Bless" on your weapon that would further increase the effect of heals for a short duration.
This is just a rough idea, and obviously it would have to be balanced so that the job doesn't do as much damage as a dps or tank, but It would be a fun change of pace to give healing jobs, and It would be a great job for melee DPS and Tanks to try to get them into enjoying the healing role as well.
