So now I think it's time to discuss the Azem reveal and what I think they will be trying to go for with Fandaniel.
Now sure Azem is a pretty cool idea and has lots of potential, and is like the driving force with our connection to Emet-Selch and the Ascians, but on the other hand I do miss back when the Warrior Of Light was just the right person who happened to be in the right place, like there have been several other Warriors of Light who fought evil besides us Ramza and Galuf, among others.
And don't get me wrong, Amaurotine is a cool place but Ishgard, the First, and Eorzea also matter right now. I'm sure the writing staff will give our character some dialogue option to discuss how we feel about being a reincarnation but right now my PC is in the camp of, " The only me is me, and the NOW matters more " Sort of like " Ardbert may have been my shard, but he had his own life, his own friends, his own powers, and is his own man. He's not a lesser version of me. " remembering is important but we cannot live in the shadow of the ancients forever and must strive to prove we are worthy stewards of the Star.
And then Fandaniel's line of " being free to live for the moment and no longer being bound by moldering memories and damnable duty " can really sort of hit a chord with this mentality. Despite being an Ascian, he really doesn't have reason to care about the old world since he's sundered. And just like us he was informed by Emet-Selch of the old world second hand, he himself has never lived in Amaurotine or the end of days, he just has memories of it. So why care about the past when he can enjoy life to the fullest in his own hedonistic way? He's immortal, can possess whatever corpse he can find, and has magic powers, with great power comes great insanity.
I think the angle the writers will go for when we eventually fight him is that why should the sundered give a shit for the old world when they can rule over the new world as kings? That and both us and Fandaniel only have memories of a past life, but not the actual life itself, and are our own people. And the old ways vs new ways, how Fandaniel will contrast to Emet-Selch and Elidibus, just as we are different from Azem.
In addition, this also makes him a foil to Ryne, except Ryne actually cares for people and is given her own name, while Fandaniel is using a title he was given by Emet-Selch or another unsundered Ascian. Both seek to establish their own individuality but Fandaniel is psychotic and selfish about it.
Turns out an organization willing to commit mass genocide for their own goals is full of psychotic and selfish people without guys like Emet-Selch and Elidibus to reign them in.
