The Decline Of The Community

Hi,

I'm an on and off player which has been around since day one of ARR.
I have over 4k hours on my main character, I think this gives me a decent insight into the community and how it has changed over the years and there's something that has been on my mind for quite a while now.

The FFXIV community used to be absolutely amazing.
Helpful patient players, wholesome players, players that were invested in the game who knew the story, the lore etc. It wasn't perfect but generally people wanted to interact with one another and had fun doing so.

There are still many good people in the game, but it's changing fast.
Over the last two years the game community has changed so much and not for the better imo. Where we once had helpful players, meaningful interactions we now have people yelling lewd and/or stupid memes. Where we had wholesome experiences now we have "degeneracy".

What do I mean by degeneracy? It's all those people in Limsa Lominsa and similar places where people constantly ERP, abuse the emotes to spam and/or try to mimic erotic sounds. It's all of those ERP people in group finders, it's all of those 18+ FC's where the people are more interested in the NSFW channels they have on their discord servers and running a brothel in their FC house than in the actual game. It's all those people yelling stupid memes in the cities or in instances instead of having a normal human conversation.

I was thinking about what has changed, why is the community turning degenerate?
I came to a conclusion that's it's all SE's fault. :)

Let me explain.
SE made a fantasy mmorpg game. The target "audience" was of course Final Fantasy and mmorpg players.
However, in recent years this has shifted to advertising the game more as the best game for mmo players, non-mmo players and even non gamers.

Has this attracted more people to the game? Yes. However, has this benefited the community? Well, that's more complicated and in my opinion No.
The quality of players has dropped drastically, and not only gameplay wise, but even as human beings.

This alone wouldn't be that much of an issue, but SE is doing everything in their power to feed this.

How do they feed it?
  • Making the game more accessible to less invested people = easier.
  • Allowing cross server gameplay = why bother interacting with anyone in a wholesome way when you're probably never gonna see them again.
  • Not punishing people for using mods = there's a huge NSFW mod community which makes things worse.
  • Expanding the free trial = more people not worried about the consequences of their actions

Right now the community is still somewhat okay, but if the trend continues, the game will be just ew.

I'm not sure why I'm posting this, probably just to point out something I find really sad about the game hoping it would make a tiny difference. But who knows, perhaps I'm the only one feeling this way.
