The removal of Mare Synchronos was not about protecting the game. It was an attack on the players who used it to build community, share creativity, and enjoy the social side of FFXIV. Mare was opt-in, used mostly in private RP spaces, and did not harm gameplay or violate anyone's privacy. It simply allowed friends to sync visual mods and enjoy a shared experience.

Modding did not go away. Players were not banned for using Mare. Only the syncing feature was shut down, while mods themselves continue to be used across the game. Meanwhile, bots and stalker plugins like PlayerScope still exist. The Mare devs even used account IDs to ban predators and bad actors from their service. Those same people forked Mare and created LSync, also known as Lopsync or LoporritSync, which is still active and unaffected.

This was not about fair enforcement. The people who used Mare to have fun with friends got punished, while the worst actors kept their tools.

Also, Mare was never about excluding vanilla players. Anyone claiming that is misrepresenting the situation. My sister and I worked at venues that were fully modded while we remained completely vanilla, doing greetings and shouting announcements as well as being paid for dancing and we were welcomed and respected. Any exclusion that did happen was more likely related to adult animations or chat, and honestly, there's a site for that if that's what you're looking for.

This decision hurt the most creative and community-driven part of the player base. It took away a harmless tool that brought joy, while leaving the real problems untouched.
