Tech Stuff: How to disable AIM Advertising

I use AIM because friends use it. However, I get stuck with the stupid ads in the AIM window... The ads themselves are not that bad except when they have sound attached to them. While at work, I listen to music through my computer (or iPod attached) and every so often I will mouseover the AIM window ad area and it would blare out some crap music or sounds.

Today, it happened except this time it was some crap rap shit for cell phones.... ringers or whatever... and it was loud, the next 4 offices in my area all heard it. :arg:

ANYWAY.....

So if you want to disable the ads in AIM do this:

VERIFIED WITH WIN XP PRO and AIM 6.0.28.1

1. Close AIM (if it's open)
2. Open this file in a text editor: (or use Windows Explorer)
X = your system drive %systemroot% = your windows folder.
X:\%SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS
3. With the file open make the following changes at the bottom of the file:
(you should the current last line: 127.0.0.1 localhost)

Add the following:
127.0.0.1 twx.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 bannerfarm.ace.advertising.com
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net

4. Save the file.
5. Open AIM
6. No More Ads! YAY!

Enough of that bullshit.

Hope this helps someone else out there.

PS: No, I don't use that 3rd party bullshit. Don't like it.

:o my fault for not scrolling enough.

I was that way for a long time too. Trillian and Miranda were two that I tried that just sucked donkey walnuts. They were just too clunky and Trillian sucks up resources like whoa. I tried Gaim though since I like to be on Y/G/A at work and can't use all three clients seperately without killing my box. I honestly think its interface and stability is better then any of the first party programs.

Nice work with AIM though. I'll forward this info to a couple friends who still use it.

I just hit the pause button once an ad with motion comes up, and they stop from there. Just don't unpause it.

HOLY SHIT THANK YOU

This is driving me fucking crazy. The worst is that now some of the ads play this horrible rap music when you move your cursor over them. But there's some kind of bug where the music won't always stop when your cursor leaves. I'd be listening to music and just moving my cursor aroun and bam rap music starts playing out of nowhere and it wouldn't go off. this fix is gonna be a lifesaver, lol

The rap music is what drove me over the edge. You probably heard the same thing today as I did or atleast at some point.

Glad it helps you out. :D

what if I have a bunch of other IPs with names underneath Localhost? what are they for?

Uhhhhhh.... that could be good or that could be bad.

Can you Cut-n-paste to see what they are?

Sometimes viruses do it...
Sometimes adware/spyware do it...

Very RARELY does a legit software app change the HOSTS file.

In theory, the only entry you should have is the localhost entry, the loopback (local) address for your PC. With the exception of things like what I describe in Post #1.

W/e some people like it and some dont.

I dont like pop idol japanese music sung by preteen girls, but AA can like whatever he wants.

One things for sure, Old snoop would kill and rob New snoop....thats what I heard.

Actually I can listen to certain rap music. What FUCKING PISSES ME OFF is when I'm listening to other music, or I'm on Skype talking to a colleague in Brazil, then all of a sudden fucking rap music starts blaring out of nowhere for NO FUCKING REASON.

I hardly listen to any music at all anymore. If I have the radio on, its usually on sports talk.
