I use AIM because friends use it. However, I get stuck with the stupid ads in the AIM window... The ads themselves are not that bad except when they have sound attached to them. While at work, I listen to music through my computer (or iPod attached) and every so often I will mouseover the AIM window ad area and it would blare out some crap music or sounds.
Today, it happened except this time it was some crap rap shit for cell phones.... ringers or whatever... and it was loud, the next 4 offices in my area all heard it.
:arg:
ANYWAY.....
So if you want to disable the ads in AIM do this:
VERIFIED WITH WIN XP PRO and AIM 6.0.28.1
1. Close AIM (if it's open)
2. Open this file in a text editor: (or use Windows Explorer)
X = your system drive %systemroot% = your windows folder.
X:\%SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS
3. With the file open make the following changes at the bottom of the file:
(you should the current last line: 127.0.0.1 localhost)
Add the following:
127.0.0.1 twx.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 bannerfarm.ace.advertising.com
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
4. Save the file.
5. Open AIM
6. No More Ads! YAY!
Enough of that bullshit.
Hope this helps someone else out there.
PS: No, I don't use that 3rd party bullshit. Don't like it.
