Why?
- Enhancing game content accessibility to people who can't really afford buying additional items. While in Europe, USA and Japan something equal to 20 bucks is a hourly wage, in many other countries it's a question between starving and eating for a whole week. While it's all "optional" content indeed, everyone will be more satisfied having their character look well.
- Because of previous reason gil will have more weight in game and more people will be interested in spending more time in game to farm it, which will hold interest of people who would otherwise pause their gameplay.
- It's an solution to pretty much eliminate RMT. Most of people instead of buying gil will buy Mog station stuff and put it on market board. Most of people who selling gil for getting Mog station items will just directly buy them.

Examples of other MMO games that utilize this concept one or another way and being successful:
- Guild Wars 2: two-way conversion between premium and in-game currency.
- Phantasy Star Online 2: almost all paid cosmetic items available for trade
- Warframe: straight allowance to use premium currency for trading
- World of Warcraft: ability to renew subscriptions with gold by buying badges from another players
