On the whole I mostly enjoyed DT. While we all know the "Talk to Wuk Lamat" then "Talk to 3 villagers" to go back to "Talk to Wuk Lamat" play wasn't the greatest. What galls me even more is there are several bits that would have been great to actually play through but were just another cutscene. Just off the top of my head:
- Capturing the Alpaca
We could easily have had a little event to capture the Alpaca. Either a mini stealth bit or perhaps a small combat encounter where you defend and brefriend the Alpaca.
- Fight with Scions
A little friendly fight between us and Thancred / Urianger would have been fun. Instead the touted conflict wasn't really a conflict at all.
- Some sort of gunfight in Shaaloani
I know we can't all be Machinsts but still there could have been a section where you shoot baddies in the town. They can do Air force one in the gold saucer so something here like it. Hell it's a western town and we don't even get involved in the duel. A small Active time event to do quickdraw or something.
- Invasion of Tuliyolai
Fight is happening right there and it's all a cutscene. There could be a small battle instance where you run through and fight the invaders. See the other characters doing similar. Protect civilians and fight to the top of the city. But nope, all cutscene
- Bomb Train ride
We are sat at a gun turret on the train. This should be the literal definiton of an on rails shooter. But we just watch it all unfold. I kept waiting for it to jump into an air force one style shooting gallery and it never did.
- The play in Living Memory
There should have been lines to remember that we have to select during the play. Maybe even get a little rating afterward. How many nobles can we impress? Again, another long cutscene.
I don't have any problem with any of the actual story parts. It was just a long slog and I would have liked for things to have been a bit more interactive. There are probably more parts other people can think of where we could have been involved.
