With Dawntrail diving deeper into souls and memories, I was reminded of the spirit vessels introduced in Shadowbringers.
From the unending codex on Spirit Vessels:
Quote:
However, one other obstacle had to be overcome: the separation of mind and memory. While the two are intrinsically entwined like words writ upon parchment, the latter is wont to fade when the soul is placed into a vessel. In seeking to ensure that their memories remained intact, the companions looked to Allagan memory transference─a technique which required that their spirit vessels be imbued with royal Allagan blood. This blood was provided by the Exarch himself, and it also served to turn these vessels into keys for controlling the Crystal Tower, whose operation was restricted to the ancient empire's rulers."
This asserts that while souls may inhabit a vessel, they are prone to splitting from memories without a memory transference technique to keep them together. Somehow, Allagan royal blood helps with this.
From Origenics:
Quote:
First Stage: Extraction
Mixed aether comprised of both memory and soul is extracted from regulators and transferred into the stabilizing tank ...
Second Stage: Separation
Mixed aether is put through the aetheric separator and divided into its soul and memory components. Soul aether is then conveyed to upper Origenics for final processing, and memory aether to the Meso Terminal ...
Third Stage: Purification
Separated souls undergo thorough cleansing for the removal of residual memories. The purifying light is harmful to organic beings, so utmost care must be taken during the procedure.
Even the slightest contamination may lead to memory and personality disorders within the user. As such, each and every soul must be cleared using the precision detector....
This is consistent with the above; because Origenics separates memory and soul, it has no need of special binding techniques.
The common term the story seems to use for these ideas is "memory transference" or "memory transfer"
Rammbroes in Food for the Soul (5.3):
Quote:
Memory transference was the sole province of Allagan royalty, its mechanisms closely guarded secrets. If any record of them remains, we have yet to find it. To wit, I regret that I can offer no solution to your problem.
G'raha Tia in Reviving the Legacy
Quote:
But of course─memory transference! The process has the effect of compartmentalizing memories─separating them into manageable bundles, if you will.
By adapting the technique, it may be possible to achieve *selective* reanimation. That is, limit the effects to only those memories that existed prior to tempering.
Quest Journal of A Terminal Invitation (7.3)
Quote:
Calyx can only monitor the progress of his memory transfer in silent desperation as you spring into action, your decisive strike causing the memory bank to erupt in a spectacular explosion.
