As in title, I just finished the 5.3 MSQ.
Here's my quick tl;dr:
Now...Shadowbringers.
I could talk about the great scenery. Or Emet and the other characters on the First. Or the incredible dungeons/trials/raids (except you, Malikah's Well). But the true genius of Shadowbringers is this:
I did not care about the Ascians at all. Up until Shadowbringers, they were just some villains working behind the scenes tricking people, abusing people, etc, all working towards a plan that keeps failing. I did not care when Lahabrea poofed. I did not care about Elidibus anything. I did not care for these people one ounce, I found them all horrifically boring compared to basically anything else, and the only thing they had going for them was the Ascian boss song is PRETTY GREAT.
Shadowbringers not only made me care about the Ascians, it made me cry over them.
This was a feat that up until Shadowbringers, I would have considered impossible. The writing took people I literally could not care less about, and made me emotional and care about them deeply. It retroactively made me feel awful for Lahabrea, made me care deeply for Elidibus, etc...
The only way they could top this is if the next expansion actually makes me care about Zenos.

Here's my quick tl;dr:
ARR: It's solid. I know a lot of people don't like it, but ARR is a generic Final Fantasy story through and through. I figure that's why a lot don't find it amazing, coz it is pretty bog standard FF, but I don't think it's god awful either.
HW: Holy hell what an upgrade over ARR though. I love this expansion. Just...everything...
SB: I actually dislike this expansion more than ARR. The story was way too scattered, focusing on Ala Mhigo and Doma made it hard to have a consistent story. It does have some cool moments (Tsukuyomi, Susano, Shinryu, Lakshmi were all super awesome), but I didn't like Lyse or Zenos and they had a big focus. Zenos is just boring, even Baelsar was more interesting. The Empire is just boring because at their core they're still the bog standard FF empire through and through, that have been in several FFs including my favorite up until 14. (8, yeah I know.) At the end of the day it still isn't awful, but coming off of Heavensward it wasn't great.
