Apologies in advance if something like this has been posted before.
I only just came across this specific blurb from an interview, and I noticed Yoshida mentioned "the one [Emet-Selch] loved," and it took me by surprise a bit.
Now, I know FFXIV usually tries to leave things in an ambiguous state so they players can have room for their own interpretations and headcanons, so love here doesn't necessarily have to mean romantic love, but I will admit that the wording does feel a twinge more romantic than if he had worded it another way. (As a side note, the translator directly stated that his phrasing in Japanese could also be interpreted as "loved ones" instead of "the one he loved," so this adds some extra ambiguity to the statement if true.)
Now, my initial assumption was that he was referring to Azem, but it occurs to me that it could also just as likely be Hythlo, or even someone else entirely, given some of Emets lines in SB. Personally, my preference would be for it to be Azem he's referring to, but since he directly followed this up by stating that he wanted to "bring them back," would it not mean he couldn't be referring to Azem, due to them not being unsundered? Or perhaps I'm missing something?
Regardless, I'd like the hear what others think.
