Someting I noticed...

Talfus

~Lux Aeterna~
Well I think I fixed my computer finally, removed over 25k spyware entries and installed a cheapo anti-virus which cleaned over 93k infected files.

What I noticed when I did the ad-aware and virus scan was that at C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator, there was another folder named Complete...

The full file path is C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Complete.
I've only seen this folder while my computer is looking for virus'/spyware. From the rapidly moving virus scanner most of these files had (DivX, DVD screener, Thailand pleasures, etc in their titles) all kinds of movies and porn that I have NEVER downloaded.

When I go to explore and go to the path and type in the final \Complete my computer just locks up. I can't see this folder even when I turn on viewer settings to reveal hidden files.

Anyone know what this could be and how I can get rid of it?

EDIT: The files in this folder accounted for half the time it took to do a system wide virus scan. >_>

You got owned. It's best to wipe and reinstall.... you may never fully clean your system of that mess.

Well, like Aang said there is a good chance you may have to wipe your system. That being said, you might as well do your worst trying to get rid of that folder. Even if it is somethign crucial to the system that kills your system if you delete it... Well, you were gonna have to wipe anyway.

So

Open a command prompt and type the following (press Enter before each new line)

cd\Documents*
cd Administrator
dir /ah

See if the directory list shows something called COMPLETE. Just for the sake of curiosity.

del /S /F complete\*.*

See if anything gets deleted by the above line.

rd complete

If that didn't work for whatever, like one step had an error, try rebooting in safe mode and doing the same thing. If it -still- doesn't work in safe mode, browse to www.sysinternals.com, and download something called Process Explorer. Run that after it downloads, then go to Find > Find Handle. in the box type

Complete

and press Search. The Handle column is what you should pay attention to. If anything in the Handle column is an entry that appears to be a path to this Documents and Settings\Administrator\complete folder, look in the column on the left to see what process is using it. Also take note of the Process ID (PID) in the second column. Once you have written a list of all PID and Process names that are using one of the handles in the complete directory, close that window and then in the main Window click the "PID" header for the second column of the main window to sort the entire list of system processes by PID. Find the ones with the matching PIDs that you just wrote down. Right click that entry in the list, and choose Properties and go to the first tab "Image" to get a full path to the executable that is running which has those files claimed. Assuming this COMPLETE folder is related to your virus, that will show you the actual executable for the virus. You can delete that file if you feel it could be the culprit or if you're suspicious of it. Then again, you could be deleting a system file, so... careful ya know? Anyway, right click on the entry again in the main process list and choose Kill Process. After you've done this for every process on that list, there should be no open handles remaining to the COMPLETE directory, at which time the system should allow you to execute the DOS commands above without error to delete that directory and all its files from your hard drive.

If at any point you get confused, you can always post back here.

lol was afraid you'd say that.. >_>
Can't find any windows or drivers for my puter from when I originally built it...
Was planning on building a new one this friday when I get paid.

Kalia > Thanks, I'll try all that when I get home and see how that works.

At the moment everything seems to be under control, no more walking away from puter and coming back 10 min later to find 3 scrollable toolbars worth of pop ups.

I'm currently using some sharware anti-virus program called Kapersky or sumthin, till I can buy a full version of Mcaffe/Norton.

1. mozilla firefox as broweser, screw IE.
2. ad-aware by lavasoft (free)
3. spybot-search and destroy (free)

this is what i use, haven't had a problem in over a year

Downloaded firefox last night
Been using ad-aware (past 2-3 weeks)
Spybot I'll have to check out
Also using Diskeeper for defrag which works great. :shades02:

What Carm said. IE is for noobs, and people who want to sacrifice their computer to the spyware gods every few months. Since I downloaded Netscape I have not had a single problem in months. Firefox apparently is better, but I'm too lazy to download that. GL talfers~

problem with firefox is i can't get the sound to work on ytmnd's, no matter how many times i DL the plugins it says i need...

Actually the statement "IE is for noobs" is for people who just want to jump on the bandwagon of blaming microsoft for all the world's problems.

Yar I agree with Kalia, even though firefox provides many benifits, IE does an excellent job and I haven't had a problem with it yet.

Also uses firefox/IE
Norton Anti-virus
Spy Bot Search and Destroy
and Ad-aware
Also Reg-ScrubXP

good programs for keeping your PC spy-ware free and running efficiently

Saying IE is no good has nothing to do with a Bandwagon. If it were someone who was completely computer illiterate and had no idea what was happening to their computer and why, I'd agree with you. But there is noticeable difference between using IE and other browsers, and Microsoft itself acknowledges all the problems with IE (and their other shells, to be honest) I personally have no problem with Microsoft, I'm not one of those guys that runs out and installs Linux and won't touch anything made by microsoft - however, when I get my computer full of popups and adware etc. in a normal week's usage of IE and I can go months on end using Netscape with no problem, its a no brainer.
