So, I've picked the trial up and put it down multiple times. I could never get through the 1-35 experience without putting it down in favor of other MMOs I play and am more familiar with. Even though people told me classes start to get better in the 30-40 range.
But the other day I got back on my trial account again, on my level 22 lancer and this time I was aiming to give FFXIV a real shot. I decided to take other people's advice about how the game starts to open up more once you get to level 30 and onwards and to just get to 50 and finish MSQ.
I got to level 35 on my Dragoon (super cool class btw) and then was enjoying it enough and was really intrigued by the dark knight and red mage. So I bought the complete edition on sale for $50 and now I'm level 51 in HW content on my Dragoon.
People were right when they said the game really opens up after you hit level 50. I unlocked DRK and RDM last night and I'm having a lot of fun learning new class mechanics and playing around on multiple jobs.
What really got my attention was when I did a potd run and saw what the Dragoon plays like at level 50+. It felt like a completely different class with a lot more depth to it than I was lead on to believe based on the 1-50 experience.
Im not great at RDM but it's totally my kind of ranged class. I am usually primarily a melee player in MMOs and RPGs. But I love ranged classes that can jump in and melee something down if needed. I love Death Knights from WoW and the Reaper from GW2 so obviously DRK is exactly the kind of class I gravitate to.
Just going off of the 1-50 experience, I never would have guessed that all of the different jobs had so much depth and nuance to them. I feel like this game would be doing itself a favor if it gave players a better understanding of what their job will be capable of in the later levels. I had no idea that my Dragoon would turn into the high flying dragon slayer it is from level 50 onwards.
I've never been that into FF as this is my first game, but I'm enjoying the gameplay a lot more now that I got through the ARR content. The game REALLY has opened up and it's kind of a shame that the initial leveling experience is so off-putting for a lot of people. Because this game really does have some good things going for it in the later levels and expansion content.
Long story short, I took the advice of the community and finally committed to just grinding it out to get through ARR and now I'm having a lot of fun and don't regret it. Being an altoholic the job system is really cool and switching back and forth seamlessly between jobs is awesome.
