New Character Levelling Process - Tips?

Hey all-

So, in the process of updating FFXI now, and will then be starting in on a new toon... after sitting on hold with SE for two days off now and not being able to get through to a single REAL person to address my issue and working almost every other week-day (can't make calls out) I'm wondering if I'll ever get my old account back... that being said..

I'm going to be leveling a new dude, was wondering if there was some helpful tips as far as what I should create / where / etc... Its been a loooong time since I levelled a character (there's been 1.5 expansions since then, and new jobs created.. etc) Ideally I want to play a character I can have fun on if I don't get Jotaru back, but if I do, I'd kinda like to be able to use it as a PL account... So I'm thinking of taking BRD or RDM to 75 first for that purpose, even though I dread levelling RDM and BRD requires a job to 30 first... the caveat there being it'd almost have to be WHM, so I could sub that on BRD, and I don't much enjoy the notion of lvling WHM whoatsoever right now... etc...

So there's my dilemma; if there's any protip newbie starter advice, I'm all ears :D I've only ever done Windurst, so donno the other starting areas and whatnot, and not sure what's been changed / new cool areas to lvl solo to avoid dunes / Qufim, etc...

New character leveling has not changed.

You still start and level in the same areas just as you did 5 years ago.

The only real difference is after you can buy a Exp Ring (after getting some CP), it does go a bit faster than the olden days.

Gil is actually very easy to come by as a starting character, if you collect and sell everything you get from mobs... you can collect 100k in gil by level 10-15. Gear and weapons are not really important still at the starting levels.

I just meant recommendations as far as efficient job choices to level.. i donno what I meant really.. Meh. Wanted to do BRD or something but dont wanna lvl WHM. Even what you wrote is helpful though, I forgot about CP exp bonus rings. Hoorah!

id do bastok mainly due to the accessibility. The job id do one that can solo just as well as get fast invites aka thief or war worked best for me as palburough mines was able to hit me nearly lvl20 w/o Valkurm Dunes. This is just my being biased though.

Quit while you're ahead. I can almost guarantee you won't finish the job to 75 before you end up giving up and quitting again. STAY QUIT'D FGTS. But really, if you wan't some advice from someone who's done it all over again, talk to Falk. He got to 75 rather quickly and did some missions and whatnot in a short amount of time.

I hate Windurst with a passion, and Sandy lags me out, even though it's nice. I always do Bastok for lowbie leveling now. Can't help you with race. I'm still cursing myself up and down for not picking elvaan female when I started, ugly as they are. I didn't know I'd be a PLD when I grew up. :(

If you want bard, I'm afraid you're stuck doing whm eventually dear. May as well get it over with sooner rather than later. What might make it more tolerable is a friend to level with. And preferably they would be on a job that can do more damage than you. That kills to two major sucking points of whm. Those are usually 1)Stupid people (hopefully your friends aren't stupid) 2) Takes for fucking ever to kill anything yourself.

Get the Emperor Ring if you're only leveling a couple nights a week, it's 3 charges per week. Otherwise, get one of the 7 charge rings.

How many people here wish they could change their race in retrospect? :p

No way, I entered the game wanting to be a Mithra White Mage, and I wouldn't change a thing!

Well, I would have leveled BLM earlier, while people still wanted to party with them. >:p

QFT! Long live the kittehs!

Hell, that was 80% of the reason I bought this game. I liked the FF series but the thought of monthly fees made me cringe. When I saw there were kitty girls though... it was all over. Resistance totally futile.
(It's sad when you think about it though. Most of us have spent at least $700 on this game in fees alone. Not including expansion packs, mules or secondary characters. (._.;)

My suggestions for leveling crappy low level jobs:

1) Get a few stacks of Selbina milk, regen is awesome for lvl 1-15

2) If possible, use sub job Pup, its nice to have your pet use WS Slapstick for 50 damage at lvl 10ish.

3) Level your job to lvl 10, and use xp from campaign ops to lvl the jobs you hate to lvl, For example i get 260 xp for doing Streetsweeper III per tag or Crystal Fist 3 for 290xp or Material Storm 3 for 340 xp. I actually lvled my Scholar from lvl 10-20 using this method. Took awhile, but at least I didn't have to go to the dunes or ask someone to powerlevel your toon.

Once you hit lvl 20, Then you can use XP scrolls from Escort quests/Uninvited Guests/Spice Gals/ Secrets of the oven losts and etc, to lvl higher. My Thf is currently at lvl 33 and i have never been any xp pty for that job. Also, I got my Ninja to lvl 40 the same way ( only 1 xp pty for ninja) and i couldn't tank for my life with 4/4 enemity down merits.

4) The old fashion way and beg someone to Powerlevel you.

It's good entertainment value per hour though. A movie at $8 for 2 hours is $4 per hour. An FFXI character at say $15 for 60 hours (2hr a day, low for many of us) is $0.25 per hour, 16x better! Well, not quite that much as there were fixed costs, but I didn't count gasoline or superoverpriced food items either.

You can do better, but compared to a lot of mainstream entertainment, this is a good value.

I'm sure my entertainment expenditures would rise a lot if I ever stopped playing. :p

Take all 6 starter jobs to 10, collect all the drops and sell them. Start with the melee (so you're not having to buy scrolls to start with) first, then mage.

Get the outpost warps as soon as you can. The Dunes is now level 10 to warp to, not 20 as it was before. That makes it a lot easier to get there and level if you want to torture yourself with a dunes party rather than solo past it. Qufim is also less than it was before, so you can warp there earlier as well. Outpost warps all cost less now too.

Lastly- take whichever job you enjoy most to 30-you might as well enjoy that much. Then I'd try out all the new advanced jobs you haven't had a chance to play- you might like one of those better. Once you know for sure which job you want (even if it stays brd) you can start working on it and all the sj's you'll need for it.

and... even though I don't know you, welcome back
