Leveling Up Dps Has Cured Me Of My Tanxiety

I’ve just started HW and I spent all of ARR playing MRD/WAR. I enjoy playing tank but decided to level up a DPS job so I don’t hog the tank spot when dungeoning with my friends.

Being a tank, you don’t get to see how other tanks run dungeons, I was always super paranoid that I wasn’t very good. After having an awful experience with a DPS player during Haukke Manor, I made sure to watch guides before running each dungeon so I knew what to expect.

Now leveling DRG I have seen a couple of great tanks and I’ve watched them pull bigger than I had the confidence to do and I’ve learned. I’ve also seen some utter shitshows. Some of my highlights (or maybe lowlights) include:

  • A player with multiple level 80 jobs trying to pull big in Sastasha using zero cool downs and dying during the first group of mobs.
  • Players toggling tank stance on and off repeatedly, ignoring the rest of the teams advice put it on and leave it on.
  • Players not using AOE to have aggro on the whole mob and using single target abilities, resulting in all other players being attacked.
  • One tank in Qarn with all level 25 gear on, being super squishy and spinning the boss around like a record, cleaving the rest of the team.
  • Same tank as above. Healer says this is their first run of Qarn and ask to know if there are any mechanics they need to be aware of. I say sure, let’s pause before the first boss and I’ll explain doom. Get to the boss room, three of us stop but the Tank decides to go all Leroy Jenkins. We follow and the tank and healer die to doom.

Don’t get me wrong, I am nothing special with tanking, but seeing these horror shows have given me confidence that I’m doing ok. Sure, I’m probably gonna cause some wipes in the dungeons going forward, but I use my cooldowns, I’ve got gear appropriate to my level and I’m willing to learn.

My advice to new tanks: - Tell people you’re new, they’ll be a lot more forgiving. - Cooldowns! Don’t save them for bosses. - Face the enemies away from the team (the are a few exceptions to this, such as the crocs in Qarn, but on the whole it’s good advice). - If you want to watch a guide, I recommend Stark Zodiac on YT, he makes it super simple and tells you exactly where to stand/position a boss. - If tanking isn’t your main, hall of the novice is your friend.
