I've Been Thinking About The Song Answers [spoiler: 2.x / Bahamut]

I first heard the song like most people, in the End of an Era trailer. When I first saw the trailer I didn't think much about the lyrics of the song. I liked it, but I didn't think anything beyond just...this is a cool song about Louisoix and the warriors of light. And that's all I thought of it until just recently.

I just finished the last coil of Bahamut the other day (thanks again to everyone who rushed me through!) and during the final fight I was taken aback by how fantastic the song and fight bookended the entire ARR story.

Naturally this fight got the song stuck in my head so I listened to the Distant Worlds version of the song, but this time I really paid attention to the lyrics. Having just freshly finished the story, the line 'to all of my children' made me think of the dragons, the children of Bahamut, that you see locked away in the internment hulks. Then about halfway through the song it hit me like a ton of bricks: the song is from the perspective of Bahamut, not the warriors of light. It's not a song to rally you fighting against Bahamut, it's a song rallying Bahamut to fight against you. Well Allag, you, and all of mankind, I suppose. My point is, after thousands of years of constant torture and agony of him and his people, Bahamut is the hero during that final encounter. A tragic hero, to be sure, and one blinded by vengeance and rage, but a hero all the same. Defeating Bahamut feels less like a victory and more just doing your best to erase the pain caused by your forebears.

All this throws a pall of sadness over the song, but it's made me appreciate it as a lot more than just that cool song from the trailer.

I just made it through all of the story content of A Realm Reborn, so this is really only commenting on the lore through 2.x (more specifically the lore in the coils, since that's really the only part in 2.x about Bahamut). I've heard some people have found new meaning in the song after Shadowbringers, but since I haven't gotten to that point I can't really comment on that.

Anyway, this has been on my mind and I don't really have anyone to talk to about it, so I just wanted to share my thoughts with all of you.
