So I've been a pretty heavy wow player for about 6 months getting into a decent amount of endgame content, doing some auction house capitalism, levelling lots of alts, etc. Great times. Then my friends dropped it and started playing ffxiv and after holding out for a while (I do really enjoy World of Warcraft) I downloaded the free trial. I recently did my first dungeon and was just absolutely blown away by how nice everyone was!
I'm playing a Marauder purely because playing a skinny girl with a giant axe is my Gaming Comfort Zone. Which as I queued for this dungeon it dawned on me that meant I was going to be the tank, the leader. I had no fucking clue what I was doing though! In WoW, I've definitely been yelled at and seen other tanks get yelled at for not knowing what they were doing in levelling dungeons before. A lot. So I was worried.
It turns out I didn't need to be everyone was lovely! People were friendly, someone tried to give me advice when I pulled too many mobs by accident as I'm still really bad at knowing threat ranges. Then when we were fighting one of the bosses my internet started dying and I was worried feeling like I was letting everyone down. Someone tried to give me advice on doing something wrong (I have no idea what my character was doing on their screen) but when they noticed I was lagging they just said "oh you're lagging sorry!". Which is just... Such an alien concept to me. I've been kicked from dungeons in wow for that! And then my internet put its big girl pants back on and we just went through the rest of the dungeon and it was fine and everyone was friendly. I even got a commendation at the end which was really nice!
So yeah I'm sure you guys get this a lot but if this wasn't a fluke and the community is just like this I can see myself making the jump to ffxiv. I default to being scared of gaming communities because they're usually full of assholes and as someone from a minority group I tend to have to try really hard to avoid the assholes or I'll end up getting a bunch of hate in chat. So this was just a mind boggling experience. Thanks for not being assholes!
