I hate Firefox...

Lylie

Annoying French person
Last week, during the 10 hours maint. people on TS decided to go play Spades, and Poker on game.yahoo.com. Problem, Firefox kept asking me for plugins I apparently didn't have, and eveytime it tried to download them, it kept telling, halfway through the installation, that it couldn't find a file, and therefor couldn't finish the process... So I tried with IE, and it worked perfectly (despite the pop up blocker that Furax helped me turn off).

This morning, Firefox suddenly tells me it needs to make an update, and asks me if I want to install it, now or later. Being busy reading stuff, I choose to upgrade FF later. 5 minutes later, it tells me it is installing the stupid update, and a new window opens for the installation... So I give up reading the interesting internet, and go to work. Come back from work later today, to see it's still trying to install the update, but hasn't moved at all, all the day... So I decide to cancel the whole thing, and now, FF won't work.

So I'm calling the nerdy people, why is Firefox so lame? Does IE also have a system that allows you to open several pages in the same window (sorry, don't know the English name for this)? Can you transfer you book marked sites file from FF to IE? I don't have any book mark on IE, and don't want to do it all manually... Can I fix Firefox to make it work again? Can I update IE to last version and is it any good?

Thanks. Don't want to turn this into a FF vs IE KI thread, but right now, FF pisses me off...

On the FF browser you do...

Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > File > Export > Save the file

Then you import them on IE. Just open up the add favorites button and Click on Import and Export.

EDIT: Yes, IE7 has tabs same as FF. I don't usually use FF for anything that requires a plugin or such, FF always seems to screw up. Yet i don't usually use IE for having tons of tabs open either, IE seems to be hog of memory.

once I got the plugins done, I stuck with FF. however, until you get that done it can be a bit annoying.

I haven't had those problems with Firefox, but I also haven't had to download much in the way of plugins either. I will say I adore some of the extensions like Flashblock. They've improved my web browsing experience immeasurably. The only reason I use IE is for a few work apps that require it. :P For everything else it's Firefox.

Anyway, as far as getting Firefox to work again, downloading the latest version and doing an install should take care of things. If you still can't get it to start, I'd try uninstalling, then installing fresh. I really don't know if uninstalling will affect your bookmarks though, so you should copy them first.

wondering where your bookmarks are before you uninstall firefox?
furax to the motherfuckin rescue
look here:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your computer user name will be here>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<randomly named folder>\bookmarkbackups
just look through that folder to determine which profile matches your bookmarks.
I high suggest you uninstall firefox then download this utility: http://www.ccleaner.com/
and run the firefox clean. After that. Reinstall the latest version of firefox, download all the necessary plugins @ https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/plugins/

then get adblock: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/
IE Tab: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/
and google toolbar: http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/FT3/intl/en/index.html

Furax rocks as always :D Thanks!

Btw, another minor PC issue, Norton 2006 is out of date, and requires me to buy the new version to work again, but I don't have money for it, and I hate Norton anyway, should I just uninstall it and look for something free?

I don't know of any free AV stuff. also, the path left out my "<" and ">" brackets it should read C:\Documents and Settings\"YOUR USER NAME ON THE COMPUTER"\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\"RANDOM PROFILE FOLDER NAME"\bookmarkbackups

I use AVG Free edition from www.grisoft.com

personally i think it kicks ass. since i've been using it, i've never been infected. it take like 30 seconds as soon as it detects an internet connection to update wich it pretty much does everyday so its very worry-free. no unexpected pop-ups to download updates during your ffxi session crashing it out of full screen. i've been using it for 2 or 3 plus years now. i heard about it from kim komando's (self proclaimed AM Radio Computer goddess, lol) radio show. you do have to renew your license occasionally, usually just for major version revisions. for initial download, and subsequent license renewals it only takes putting in your email addy. your email is used only for tracking, they dont share your email an send adds, unless you ask them to.

Rahahahaha think I'll steal this post to ask a question.

Friend of mine is computer illeterate, like bad. (and NO, It's no ME! lawl)
Somehow he's installed a program called Malware finder (or something along those lines)

I uninstalled from add/remove programs but everytime he opens IE it goes straight to their page and wants him to download the program again.

only work around I've been able to find is using his google toolbar and navigate from there.

I'll try googling the exact program name when I get home and see if there's any tech forums out there. Just kinda hoping someone here knows/heard of what this is and may have a fix.

Edit: awww snap son... 2 more posts and I'm 1337!! (yes I'm bored, and at work. Go figure)
